French sliding patio doors are very similar to the standard two-panel sliding patio doors that you’re probably used to seeing in San Diego homes, but with one key difference: French sliding patio doors have a thicker vinyl rail surrounding the glass that gives them the look of traditional French hinged doors. Regular sliding patio doors may have a 2 ½” rail, while French sliding doors may have a 4 ½" rail around the glass.
The operation of French sliding doors is the same as standard sliding patio doors, in that one door panel slides in front of the other panel (which is stationary) to open and close. Behind the operable panel, there will be a screen door, allowing in fresh air, but not bugs and debris!
