Owners of older San Diego homes (those built before 1978) should be aware that your home may contain lead-based paint. Living in a home with lead-based paint is not inherently dangerous unless the paint is somehow disturbed or begins to deteriorate, as this is what produces the lead dust that is dangerous (especially to children) when inhaled. Home improvement projects, like replacing windows and doors, is one of the ways lead paint can be disturbed, so the replacement must be done by someone trained in lead paint abatement strategies.
When BM Windows replaces windows and doors in older San Diego homes that have tested positive for lead paint, we make sure to follow lead-safe work practices to minimize the amount of lead dust that is created. We are also certified by the EPA to conduct lead-related construction activities, and we have been trained in lead paint removal. We have all of the proper equipment to deal effectively with lead paint in order to keep your home safe.
If you suspect you may have lead paint in your home we recommend the following:
- Purchase a lead test kit. These can be purchased relatively inexpensively at almost any home improvement store. They are safe and easy to use. Make sure you choose one that is EPA recognized.
If your home tests positive for lead:
- Maintain the painted surfaces in your home by regularly checking for signs of chipping or peeling paint. Wipe down flat surfaces and mop smooth floors on a weekly basis to control dust.
- Consider having lead paint removed or encapsulated by a professional, especially if you see chipped or peeling paint.
- Only use a replacement window contractor that is certified by the EPA to deal with lead paint.
We understand that learning that your home contains lead paint can be unnerving. However, given the prevalence of lead paint in pre-1978 homes, BM Windows has dealt with removing windows containing lead paint many, many times. We will walk you through the process and take every precaution to make sure your home is as safe as it can be. Our customers are our number one priority, and we do everything we can to ensure their safety and satisfaction. Don’t let lead paint stop you from enjoying beautiful, new, energy-efficient windows and doors. Contact us at BM Windows if you have any questions about having your windows and doors replaced.
