Congress Renews Federal Tax Credit for Energy Efficient Windows and Doors
On January 1, 2013 Congress passed the “American Taxpayer Relief Act” which includes federal tax credits for energy efficient consumer products. In total, the tax credit applies to 6 categories of products, one of which is energy efficient windows and doors. The Energy Star tax credit is for 10% of the cost, up to $500 for windows and doors. However, the credit includes a cap of $200 for windows alone. San Diego homeowners can easily take advantage of the federal tax credit as it applies to replacement windows, replacement doors, vinyl replacement windows and new construction windows. In fact, the credit applies to the purchase of any energy efficient window and door whether it was for replacement or not. In 2009 New York’s Empire State Building showcased a new process to retrofit existing buildings to improve environmental sustainability. The goal of the $500 million upgrade program is to upgrade some of the tallest buildings in New York City to reduce energy usage by up to 38%. The process was also created with the intention of being used for similar projects around the world.
