What Should I Look for in a Replacement Window Warranty?
This is a really important question that isn’t asked nearly enough, in our opinion. The warranty that comes with the replacement windows you buy should definitely be a part of your purchasing decision—especially if you plan to be in your home for a while.
Just about every replacement window on the market comes with some sort of warranty, but the terms in them can actually vary quite a bit. The coverage period can also vary. Some warranties only cover the windows for five years, while others will cover the windows for as long as the original purchaser owns the home. The best window warranties offer a lifetime warranty that can also be transferred to the next owner of the home. These are called double lifetime warranties. Some manufacturers also include coverage for accidental glass breakage.
Every window warranty has a list of exclusions—things it won’t cover. The listed exclusions typically include damage that results from using caustic cleaning products, normal wear and tear, and improper installation, among other things. Some warranties also have exclusions for windows installed in coastal homes, which is something that applies to many San Diego homeowners. (A “coastal home” is typically defined as one that is located within two miles of the coast.)
Not only should homeowners take note of the listed exclusions, but they may also want to look into how responsive a window manufacturer tends to be when warranty claims are made. You can get a good idea of this by doing a quick online search. Some of the larger manufacturers can take months to get to customers having issues with their windows!
At BM Windows, we only work with window manufacturers that respond promptly to customer claims. In addition, BM Windows offers our own installation warranty to every customer. Our warranty covers all the parts and labor used in the installation process and also offers special coverage for windows installed in coastal homes. Between our warranty and the manufacturers’ warranties, our customers have the best coverage in the industry!
A good warranty can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars if anything ever goes wrong with your replacement windows, because any repairs will be fully covered. You’ll pay nothing out of pocket.
Our recommendation to anyone replacing the windows in their San Diego home is to not settle for anything less than a lifetime warranty from a reputable manufacturer and to work with a company that provides you with an installation warranty on top of the manufacturer’s warranty. Most companies selling replacement windows in San Diego only offer the manufacturer’s warranty, so be sure to ask specifically about an installation warranty!
