For some of our replacement window customers, safety is their top priority when it comes to selecting new windows for their homes. They want windows with good locks that are difficult to open from the outside, as well as windows that contain safety glass that doesn’t break easily.
Fortunately for these San Diego homeowners, BM Windows offers replacement windows with great safety features!
Recently, Anlin Windows, one of our preferred manufacturers, released a new safety glass upgrade, which they are calling their “First Guard Laminated Safety Glass.” What sets this laminated glass apart from regular window glass is a special layer of polyvinyl butyral (a polymer) that is placed between the two panes of glass. This is no regular polymer. It is two times thicker than the polymers used in most safety glass!
When an attempt is made to break this safety glass, it is very difficult to get through. When tested by the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM), the glass complied with their rigorous Forced Entry Test. This test showed that the First Guard Laminated Safety Glass was able to withstand 20 hits from a 32-ounce hammer wielded by a 250-pound person without producing a hole larger than eight inches in diameter. You probably don’t want to try that on your windows at home—you likely won’t get the same results!

While this safety glass isn’t impossible to penetrate (no safety glass is), it does provide you with a good amount of response time if someone is trying to break into your home.
In addition to this safety glass, which is an optional upgrade for all Anlin windows, every Anlin window comes standard with locking hardware that passes the most stringent third-party forced entry resistance test in the industry. All hardware is attached to metal reinforcement and a continuous interlocking rail, which prevents “jimmying.” Anlin sliding patio doors come standard with two heavy-duty locking hooks, with the option to upgrade to four hooks. Anlin’s French doors have a three-point locking system with a deadbolt for additional security.
While there’s no way to fully prevent break-ins from happening, purchasing replacement windows with enhanced safety features, like the ones mentioned above, can go a long way toward discouraging would-be smash-and-grab burglars. If they find that your home is too difficult to get into, they will likely move on.
