Are you someone who likes to save money—especially on large purchases? With the cost of pretty much everything going up over the past few years, it seems like just about everyone is looking for ways to save.
If you’ve decided it’s time to replace your home’s windows, but absolutely don’t want to spend more than necessary, this blog post is for you! We’ll be telling you some ways you can save on replacement windows for your San Diego home.
Go with an Independent Replacement Window Dealer in San Diego
This first piece of advice may seem counterintuitive, but working with a company that specializes in replacement windows and doors can typically save you money—especially if you are looking for quality products.
In many other cases, if you want to save money on home improvement products, you would go to a place like a large discount warehouse. When it comes to replacement windows, however, you will often get the best deals from specialty replacement window companies like BM Windows. These companies are often authorized dealers for multiple replacement window brands and can get you the best deal possible on quality windows and doors.
Don’t Just Look at the Most Popular Brands of Replacement Windows
Many people assume that the brands of windows that are “household names” are the best, and those are the ones they should buy. They shy away from brands they’ve never heard of. We’re here to tell you that being open to brands that you may not have heard of can save you a substantial amount of money!
The popular brands of windows often sell for more simply because of their name recognition—not because they are better quality, more durable, or more energy efficient. Their manufacturers are simply better at marketing.
At BM Windows, we sell brands that are made by lesser-known, regional manufacturers that don’t spend as much on marketing, but instead, develop quality products that perform well in the San Diego climate.
By going with a brand of windows you may not have heard of, you could get better windows for less money at the end of the day!

Don’t Forget About Tax Credits for Energy-Efficient Windows and Doors
To make your new windows more affordable, don’t forget about the federal tax credit that is available for energy-efficient windows and doors. Your savings won’t come immediately but will be a nice bonus come tax time! As of this writing, you can currently get a tax credit of up to $1,100 when you purchase new windows and doors that meet the federal government’s energy efficiency standards. The team at BM Windows can help you select replacement windows and doors that meet those requirements and provide you with any paperwork you need to claim the tax credit.
You can learn more about tax credits for replacement windows and doors here. (Even though the link goes to a blog post we wrote back in January 2023, all the information still applies.)
Strategically Choose Upgrades
All the replacement windows and doors we sell at BM Windows are great without any add-ons or upgrades because they come standard with the features that most San Diego homeowners are looking for. However, some of our customers want to upgrade the glazing system in their windows for even better insulation from outside temperatures. They are choosing to spend a little more upfront in order to save money on their energy bills for years to come.
Spending money on energy-efficient upgrades can definitely be money well spent and save you money long term, but you can make even better use of your money if you make strategic upgrades. For example, you could only upgrade the windows that will go in the rooms in your home that get the hottest, like if you have a room or two in your home that are heavily exposed to the afternoon sun.
Don’t Just Focus on Price
This piece of advice may sound odd, but hear us out! Don’t just buy the cheapest windows you can find.
Cheap windows are cheap for a reason. They are typically made from lesser-quality materials and are shoddily constructed. They might look decent initially, but they will start to show their age after only a short amount of time. They will have very little energy-saving technology built into them, so you likely won’t see the energy savings you had hoped for, and the warranty probably won’t cover any of the problems you will inevitably have with the windows.
Instead of looking for the cheapest replacement windows, look for a good balance of price and quality. This balance is often found in windows that aren’t household names (see above).
At BM Windows, we are here to help you find the best windows that fit within your budget. We can also help you compare the various brands on the market—even if they are brands we don’t sell. So, if you already have a quote or two from another company, we can tell you how the windows they are quoting compare to the ones we sell at BM Windows.
