Are Replacement Windows and Retrofit Windows the Same Thing?

As you start researching the purchase of new windows for your San Diego home, you might see several different phrases related to residential windows. You’ll see phrases like “replacement windows,” “retrofit windows,” and “new construction windows.” In this FAQ, we’ll try to clear up some of the confusion around these phrases so you know what exactly you should be asking for when it comes time to purchase your new windows.

First of all, let’s get the term “new construction windows” out of the way. New construction windows are windows that are installed in homes as they are being built (or in a new room addition). They are attached directly to the studs of the wall—before the drywall and exterior wall material is installed. If you are looking to replace your existing windows in your already-built home, you do NOT want new construction windows. Instead, you want replacement windows or retrofit windows.

Next, let’s move on to the terms “replacement windows” and “retrofit windows.” These two terms are interchangeable. Both refer to new windows that are installed within the spaces currently occupied by a home’s existing windows. At BM Windows, we tend to use the term “replacement windows” most often, because that is the term most homeowners tend to use, but if you want to call them “retrofit windows,” you can certainly do that!

Replacement windows are great for existing homes, because they allow homeowners to upgrade their homes with new, energy-efficient windows without having to open up the walls—which would necessitate costly repair work to be done after the new windows are installed. Instead, the old glass unit is removed and a new one is installed within the existing space. No damage is done to the surrounding walls—interior or exterior! This helps keep the cost of window replacement down immensely!

At BM Windows, the majority of what we sell is replacement windows. However, we do offer new construction windows to our customers who need them or want them. For example, if a homeowner was opening up their walls anyway (like if they were replacing all of their home’s siding), they may choose to have new construction windows installed. Customers can also order a combination of new construction and replacement windows, depending on their specific circumstances.
