Is Jeld-Wen a Good Brand of Replacement Windows for San Diego Homes?

If you’ve done any research on new windows in the San Diego area, you’ve likely come across the Jeld-Wen brand of windows. Jeld-Wen is one of the largest manufacturers of windows in the country. Their products are sold throughout San Diego in stores like Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Dixieline. They are also found in many tract homes throughout San Diego.

Our San Diego replacement window company sometimes gets asked over the phone or in our initial meeting with homeowners if we sell Jeld-Wen windows, and we have to tell them that we don’t.

Jeld-Wen has acquired some other window companies in recent years, and they have consolidated their manufacturing, which has led to some growing pains for the company. Homeowner complaints about their products’ quality and customer service have increased substantially since then. The company seems to be pretty good about fixing any issues with their products, but it’s a hassle for homeowners, nonetheless.

Does Jeld-Wen Even Make Replacement Windows?

Jeld-Wen does make replacement windows, but they are not the manufacturer’s specialty. Jeld-Wen is better known for making windows that are designed for new construction—an entirely different style of window.

Because Jeld-Wen is focused on windows for new home builds, the average homeowner isn’t really their target customer. Rather, their business model is targeted toward large homebuilding companies, to whom they can sell their windows in bulk. Builders are largely looking for the best prices on products, not necessarily the best quality. In other words, a builder will sacrifice some quality to save a few bucks. Jeld-Wen caters to that mindset with budget-friendly windows that look nice (when new), but that may not perform well or hold up over time.

Homeowners, on the other hand, tend to look for quality—especially in products that they hope will last for the long term. They will often be willing to pay a bit more for more durable, energy-efficient windows.

Jeld-Wen’s replacement window products are of the same builder-grade quality as their new construction windows. There are far better products on the market, in our opinion, which is why we don’t sell them at BM Windows.
