Can You Install Windows and Doors That Are Different Shapes and Sizes Than What’s There Now?
Most of the homeowners we work with in San Diego want to replace their windows and doors with new windows and doors of the same size and shape. However, it is sometimes the case that they want to make some changes to the sizes or shapes of some of their windows or doors. Maybe they want a larger window in a certain room to take advantage of a great view of the outdoors, or they may even want to replace a window with a set of patio doors to gain better access to the backyard.
These are definitely possibilities. However, there are a few things you should know about replacing windows and doors with new ones of different sizes.
First of all, most replacement window companies will need to bring in an outside contractor to handle a portion of the work. Some size or shape changes will require additional work that is beyond the scope of a typical replacement window installation team. This is especially true if you are changing out a window for a patio door. It will require new framing and other work to be done before the new doors are ready to be installed. If you want to put in a window that is smaller than the one that is currently there, you’ll need bring in someone who can patch the exterior stucco or siding and the interior drywall surrounding the smaller window.
At BM Windows, we can recommend local contractors who can help you complete the necessary work that is beyond our scope of expertise. We want to make sure you get exactly what you want when it comes to new windows and doors, and we will work with you to make it happen.
Another thing you should be aware of is that making changes to the shapes or sizes of your windows will increase the timeline of your project. At BM Windows, we can typically complete the installation of a whole house full of windows and doors in just one or two days. But, if there is additional construction that needs to take place, this will most likely cause your project to take longer. There will also be additional fees that will be incurred.
If you think you might want to change the sizes of your windows or doors while replacing them, we are happy to help you with this; just make sure you let us know up front so we can factor that into your quote.
