On January 1, 2013 Congress passed the “American Taxpayer Relief Act” which includes federal tax credits for energy efficient consumer products. In total, the tax credit applies to 6 categories of products, one of which is energy efficient windows and doors. The Energy Star tax credit is for 10% of the cost, up to $500 for windows and doors. However, the credit includes a cap of $200 for windows alone.
San Diego homeowners can easily take advantage of the federal tax credit as it applies to replacement windows, replacement doors, vinyl replacement windows and new construction windows. In fact, the credit applies to the purchase of any energy efficient window and door whether it was for replacement or not. There is no limitation or requirement that specifies you must replace a specific number of windows or doors in your home. The credit even applies to new window and door installation where there wasn’t one previously, like an addition to the home.

Please note that the tax credit only applies to Energy Star certified window and door products. Energy Star approved products are easy to recognize, as they have a blue Energy Star sticker on the glass (like the one shown on the right). Qualified door products include replacement patio doors, French doors, single and double entry doors, vinyl replacement doors, etc. But again, they must have an Energy Star sticker.
It’s also important to note that the credit is only for the materials purchased; labor costs do not qualify for this credit.
Lastly, the tax credit is for 2012 and 2013. So if you had your windows or doors installed in 2012 you can still claim it on your taxes for 2012. If you have any questions about the tax credit, qualifying energy efficient window and door products, or how the credit may apply to your home, please feel free to contact BM Windows for more information.
