One question we get asked a lot at BM Windows is if we sell “custom-sized windows.” Since we get this question with some regularity, we thought we’d take some time here to talk about window sizes and what you can expect when you want to order replacement windows for your home.

If you have a tract home, you may assume that the windows in your home are standard sizes. This isn’t necessarily the case. Depending on your home’s builder, the year it was built, and its style, your home’s windows could be just about any size. Therefore, when ordering replacement windows for your San Diego home, you will have to order custom-sized windows.

Buying custom-sized windows may sound like something only rich people do (you hear the word “custom” and automatically think “expensive”). But in fact, custom-sized windows are pretty much the norm in the replacement window industry. Any replacement window company in San Diego that would decide to only sell “standard-sized” windows wouldn’t be in business very long, because there really is no such thing as standard sizes when it comes to windows. Sure, there are some sizes that are more common than others. For example, you will find 24 x 36” double hung windows in a lot of bedrooms in San Diego homes, but they are by no means the only window size you’ll find in bedrooms.

If you’ve ever purchased blinds for your home, you know this to be true. Home improvement stores will sell blinds in common widths—like 24”, 36”, and 48”, etc.—but even then, you may have to have them trimmed to the exact width you need. Those same blinds typically come in lengths longer than you actually need, and then it’s up to you to adjust them to the length of your window.
