If you are just beginning your research into new windows for your home, you may not know that there are two different types of windows: replacement windows and windows made for new construction. Replacement windows are also known as retrofit windows, and are the type of windows we specialize in at BM Windows.
How Do I Know if I Need Replacement Windows or New Construction Windows?
Very simply put: new construction windows are designed for new builds or additions, while replacement windows are normally installed in homes with already existing window openings.
Windows for new construction are nailed directly into the studs of a home using a nail fin frame when it is being built, which helps make the window airtight and waterproof. Replacement windows, on the other hand, are designed to fit into an existing window opening. The old window is carefully removed, and the new, more energy-efficient window is installed right in its place. Replacement windows need to be ordered to the exact specifications to get a perfect fit.

New construction windows can be used to replace windows in an existing home, but their installation involves a lot more work. The installer must remove the surrounding exterior materials (stucco, siding, brick, etc.) to expose the studs, install the window, and then replace the exterior material, attempting to match the existing exterior. The interior drywall may also need a touch-up when new construction windows are installed in an existing home. You might use new construction windows in an existing home if you are planning on redoing your home’s stucco or siding anyway, or if the studs and frame around the window are damaged and need to be replaced.
New construction windows sold in home improvement stores typically only come in limited standard sizes, so even if you are willing to replace (or pay someone to replace) the surrounding wall material to use a new construction window, you may not be able to easily get the size you need. With replacement windows, we can get the exact size you need, and we can install the new windows with no damage to the surrounding areas. Installation time is also much shorter with replacement windows. Our installation team can often install a whole house full of windows in just one day!
Do Replacement Windows Look Like an “Afterthought”?
There’s a misconception out there that new construction windows look better and perform better than replacement windows. When done right, replacement windows will look like they were always a part of your San Diego home, and will give the exterior a fresh new look. Many of our customers comment on the dramatic improvement their replacement windows have made on their home’s curb appeal.
At BM Windows, we sell several different styles of replacement windows to match the overall style of your home for a seamless look. We sell windows with a more traditional look, as well as ones that are more modern looking.
Your replacement windows will also be just as weatherproof and energy efficient as new construction windows. Our team of professional window installers know how to install replacement windows in order to get the best performance out of them!
