People don’t talk about warranties much these days, unless they are lamenting the relentless sales calls about extended car warranties. Product warranties don’t tend to be much of a deciding factor for people when making purchases—even when it comes to relatively major purchases like replacement windows in San Diego.
In this blog post we wanted to go over some of the reasons why you should care about the warranty that comes with your new windows and patio doors and give you some tips for comparing warranties among the various replacement window brands sold in San Diego.
The Length of the Warranty
The most important factor to consider in a replacement window warranty is the length of the coverage. Most of the major window brands, including those we sell at BM Windows, come with a lifetime warranty. In the warranty world, “lifetime” means the period of time that someone owns the home in which the windows were installed. With a lifetime warranty, when the house is sold, the warranty expires. However, some window manufacturers offer what’s known as a “double lifetime” warranty, which is transferrable to the next owner of the home. Anlin, which is our preferred manufacturer here at BM Windows, offers a double lifetime warranty.

Be wary of any brand that comes with a short warranty period, such as one to five years. Most manufacturing defects don’t show up right away in windows. It could be years before an issue surfaces and affects the performance of your replacement windows, and then it might be too late to make a warranty claim. A lifetime warranty really is the way to go, and fortunately, San Diego homeowners have a lot of options when it comes to replacement windows with lifetime warranties.
A Manufacturer’s Reputation for Handling Warranty Claims
As you research replacement window brands, you should also do some investigating on a manufacturer’s response to warranty claims. With some of the larger brands, you will probably find a lot of complaints that it takes months, and multiple follow-up calls, to get a warranty claim handled (if it gets handled at all). It doesn’t have to be this way! The manufacturers we work with at BM Windows tend to have quick response times and do everything they can to remedy any issues—even if it means completely replacing the faulty window.
An Installation Warranty
A few replacement window companies in San Diego offer a lifetime installation warranty to every customer—and BM Windows is one of them. This installation warranty is in addition to the manufacturer’s warranty. The manufacturer’s warranty only covers product defects, while the installation warranty covers issues related to the windows’ installation, so it’s important to have both!
If the replacement windows you purchase do not come with an installation warranty, you could be on the hook to pay for any repairs that need to be made due to faulty installation. This could set you back hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars, depending on the seriousness of the issue.
The BM Windows lifetime installation warranty is included with every purchase!
