Tax season is a long way away—especially for those people who wait until the last minute to file. But now is the time to start thinking about reducing your tax bill by taking advantage of the federal tax credits available for qualified energy efficiency home improvements.
The federal government is looking to incentivize homeowners to make their homes more energy efficient, which is great news for San Diego homeowners who were already considering door and window replacement for their homes!
Homeowners who install replacement windows and doors can claim up to $1,100 in tax credits (up to $600 for replacement windows and up to $500 for exterior doors). However, here’s the important thing to know: If you want the tax credit to be applied to your 2024 tax return, the project must be completed and paid for by the end of this calendar year. Because the process of window replacement in San Diego can take about six to eight weeks, you need to get the process started now to take advantage of the credit in 2024.

To be clear, your home won’t be under construction for six to eight weeks. During most of that time, your replacement windows and doors are being custom made for your home at the manufacturing plant. Once your windows and doors are completed and arrive at our San Diego warehouse, we will then schedule an installation date with you. The actual installation of your windows and doors will only take one day (or possibly two days if you have an exceptionally large number of windows and doors in your home).
When your window replacement is complete, we will provide you with a receipt, which is all you need to claim the federal government’s energy efficient home improvement credit. Just include a copy of this receipt with all the other paperwork that you give to your accountant. If you complete your own tax return using an online system like the ones through TurboTax or H&R Block, answer “yes” when the system asks you if you have completed any energy efficient upgrades to your home during 2024.
Please note that you can only claim up to $1,200 in energy efficient home improvement credits per year, so if you completed other qualifying projects during 2024, such as new insulation or a natural gas furnace, you may not be able to claim the entire credit for your window and door replacement.
Here at BM Windows, we are window replacement experts, not tax experts, so if you have specific questions about how a tax credit will affect your 2024 tax bill, you should consult a tax accountant. But if you’re ready to learn more about how window replacement can affect your San Diego home, we would love to help you out! Contact our office today to set up a free consultation.
