As a homeowner, you have likely experienced both good and bad work done on your home. There may have been times when you tried to save some money and hired an unlicensed handyman to help you out with some projects, and it didn’t go well—or maybe you even hired a contractor with the proper license and your project still didn’t turn out as expected. Other times, you were fortunate enough to work with a contractor or a company that did exactly what they said they would do and met, or even exceeded, your expectations!
When it comes to window installation in San Diego, there a lot of people who claim they can do it. You’ll find do-it-all handymen, general contractors, as well as professional window installers—all of whom will happily take your money in exchange for installing replacement windows in your home. Before you hire someone, here are a few things to think about with regard to window installation in San Diego:
Handymen vs. Contractors for Window Installation in San Diego
While most handymen will claim they are able to complete window installation projects, they are usually not legally allowed to. This is because the State of California limits handymen to projects that are priced under $500 (including the cost of materials). Even if you are only having a few windows installed, the cost of the project will likely exceed this amount.
For projects that cost more than $500, you will need to hire a licensed contractor. You can hire a general contractor with a “B – General Building” license, or you can hire a contractor that specializes in window installation with a “C-17 – Glazing” license. At BM Windows, we have a C-17 license.
Why should you hire a licensed contractor? There are several reasons, but the most important one is for your protection! Every licensed contractor is required to have at least a $25,000 bond. If anything goes wrong with your project—the contractor makes a mistake and refuses to fix it, or they walk off the job without completing it (after taking your money)—you can file a claim against their bond, and you could get some or all of your money back. You can also report the contactor to the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) and possibly get the contractor’s license suspended or revoked, and no contractor wants to risk that!
With a handyman, you have no recourse if anything goes wrong with your project—other than taking them to court.

Hiring a licensed contractor also means that you are hiring someone who has gone through the process to become licensed—which requires individuals to prove their knowledge and experience in the trade. C-17 contractors will have been tested specifically on their knowledge of windows and proper window installation.
Proven Experience with Window Installation in San Diego
Before you go out and hire a general contractor for window installation in your San Diego home, make sure he or she has a good amount of experience and skill in this particular type of project. With window installation, there are definitely some tricks of the trade to ensure that windows are properly installed!
At BM Windows, we have installed new windows in hundreds of homes throughout the San Diego area that you can drive by and see right now. To find them, simply go to our Location Finder and type in your address. You will be given a map that points to homes in your area that have had their new windows installed by the BM Windows team.
Properly installed windows will not only perform better, but they also ensure that the window manufacturer’s warranty stays intact. If you ever experience issues with your windows down the road, your warranty claim could be denied if the manufacturer determines that they were improperly installed! This could end up costing you hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars out of your own pocket to repair or replace your windows!
When you work with BM Windows, we provide you with a lifetime window installation warranty on top of the manufacturer’s warranty, so your windows are fully covered! We are able to do this because we have extreme confidence in the abilities of our window installation team. Our team members are highly experienced and skilled. They are some of the best window installers in the business! You won’t find skilled installers like ours, or an installation warranty like the one we offer, at many other replacement window companies in San Diego, and you definitely won’t get one from a handyman or even a general contractor!
