Recently, we came across an article by the good folks at Budget Dumpster about the top five home improvement projects in San Diego that have a good return on investment (ROI). These are projects that the experts say will allow you to recoup some (or all) of the money spent when you go to sell your house in the future. In the article, they mention things like replacing the siding on your home, adding a wood deck, and replacing your garage door, and they estimate that San Diego homeowners can expect to recoup upwards of 90% of the project cost upon the sale of the house.
One project that didn’t make the list was installing vinyl replacement windows. While replacement windows typically only have an ROI of 70-80%, that percentage doesn’t take into account the monthly energy savings that homeowners will experience when they replace their old single pane windows with more energy-efficient double pane windows.

It’s difficult to calculate exactly how much the average San Diego homeowner saves each month on their energy bills once they have new vinyl windows installed. If you live inland, where the summer temperatures get higher, you could save a substantial amount with new vinyl windows that help insulate your home from the hot sun. Or, if you like to keep your home toasty warm in the winter, your new windows could help keep your heating bills down by keeping the cold outside air out.
One thing we do know, is that many of the San Diego homeowners we have worked with tell us that they see a “noticeable” difference in their energy bills. The other projects on the list of the “Top 5 Home Improvement Projects for ROI in San Diego” can’t make that claim. If you were to combine the energy savings with the recouped cost at the time of the home sale, replacement windows would probably easily make the list. They might even be number one on the list!
We may be a bit biased, but we can’t think of a home improvement project that makes more financial sense than installing replacement windows! We went into great detail on this topic in an e-book that BM Windows owner Michal Bohm wrote a few years ago titled Investing in Your Home: Replacement Windows and Doors. This is a free e-book that anyone can download and read to get a better understanding of the financial benefits of installing replacement windows in their San Diego home. We hope you’ll take a look at it!
