In our last blog post, we talked about why we don’t post prices on our website, or take out ads that say “X amount per window, installed!” We should also mention that we usually aren’t able quote prices over the phone or by email, despite the fact that we get requests from potential customers almost on a daily basis to do so.
In many industries, getting a price over the phone or by email is no problem, but the window replacement industry is a little different. There are many factors involved in pricing that make it necessary for us to go to a customer’s home, take measurements, and find out exactly what they are looking for in replacement windows before we can accurately quote a price.
We wanted to go into a little more detail about what can affect the price of the replacement windows and doors for your home, so you can get a better understanding of why conducting an in-home consultation is a smart idea before providing you with a quote on replacement windows for your San Diego home.
Window Size and Type
First and foremost the size of a window affects the price. Obviously, a large window is going to be more expensive than a small window. Because the size of the window is so important to pricing, we want to make sure we have accurate measurements before quoting a price. This is why we have a representative from BM Windows professionally measure every window in your home that you want replaced—so we can give you a quote that will very closely, if not exactly, resemble the final price you will pay for your replacement windows.
The style of window also affects the price. Specialty and custom windows will obviously cost more than standard styles of windows, so even if you call us having already measured all of your windows, we still wouldn’t be able to quote you a price without knowing what type of window you want in each space.

Upgrades and Enhanced Features
Another aspect of replacement windows that affects the price is the features you want in your windows. We sell several different lines of replacement windows—some being more “entry-level” lines and others being more “premium” lines of windows. Even our entry-level windows are of great quality, and very energy efficient (we don’t sell junk!), but there are definitely different levels of windows to choose from, and we can’t know which one would be the best for your home or your budget without first consulting with you.
There are also multiple upgrades you can make to replacement windows, such as decorative grids, enhanced safety features, and upgraded energy-saving and sound-deadening technology. One of our knowledgeable sales team members can help you determine which upgrades are necessary to give you the end result you are looking for (and also which upgrades you can do without).
Our sales team really listens to what you want and makes suggestions based on that. We don’t push expensive features that you don’t need or that won’t benefit you in any way. Our team can even make suggestions that can save you money. For example, we have some customers that say they want the most energy-efficient windows available. We are happy to accommodate that, but we may also suggest that not every window in their home needs the most energy-efficient technology. If you have windows that never receive any direct sunlight, like a window under a patio cover or porch, certain energy-saving features on those windows may not be necessary and buying windows without them can save you money.
Installation
It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes we need to charge a customer more for their replacement windows if the window installation in their home will be especially difficult or time-consuming. We’ve come across situations that have required special equipment or considerations in order to gain access to a window for replacement, which ended up adding to the time our crew had to spend at the home.
There are other unique situations we encounter that require extra time from our installation crew, and sometimes, they will cause the price of your replacement windows to be higher. But this is the exception rather than the rule. For the most part, our installation crew can efficiently handle any installation.
